An American widowed woman left in debt by her unfaithfull husband finds a man living on the land of Hampstead. He lives in a broken down shack but happy with his life. One day she spots him being beaten up so calls the police and goes to see him, so after this she starts to fall for him and helps him from being evicted.

This Christmas, primary school teacher Paul Maddens is charged with producing the school's nativity play. Competing against the posh rival school for the honor of best reviewed show in town, the stakes are raised when Paul idly boasts that his ex-girlfriend Jennifer, a Hollywood Producer, is coming to see his show with a view to turning it into a film. The only trouble is - they haven't spoken in years. With eccentric assistant Mr Poppy fuelling his 'little white lie', Maddens suddenly finds himself a local celebrity and at the center of quarreling parents and over-excited children desperate in their bid for fame and fortune. Maddens' only hope is to get back in touch with Jennifer and lure Hollywood to town so that everybody's Christmas wishes come true.

Orphaned the previous Christmas young Goose looks after his dementing grandma,selling stolen goods to soft-hearted fence Frank on his Manchester estate. One Christmas Eve Goose meets Anthony,an enigmatic,fey stranger with apparent psychic powers,being able to tell by touching them what people have lost,from Frank's first edition of Oscar Wilde to a retired doctor's wife. Hoping that its return will lead to him finding his lost dog,Goose persuades Anthony to help him retrieve a bangle he stole and ends up meeting the wife of his probation officer,whose young daughter died on the same day as Goose's parents. But Anthony is not what he seems to be at all and is capable of changing everybody's life for the better when his true identity is revealed.

Slice-of-life look at a sweet working-class couple in London, Shirley and Cyril, his mother, who's aging quickly and becoming forgetful, mum's ghastly upper-middle-class neighbors, and Cyril's pretentious sister and philandering husband. Shirley wants a baby, but Cyril, who reads Marx and wants the world to be perfect, is reluctant. Cyril's mum locks herself out and must ask her snooty neighbors for help. Then Cyril's sister Valerie stages a surprise party for mum's 70th birthday, a disaster from start to finish. Shirley holds things together, and she and Cyril may put aside her Dutch cap after all.
